Message from the Executive Committee Chairman

“Now What??—A Call to Action”

Recent rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court have made it abundantly clear that we are entering a new era in America—one that feels incredibly familiar to many. Now, the high court is determined to erode not only the rights of minorities but also of women, students, and the LGBTQ community.

We must acknowledge that America has historically struggled with inequity. Chicago, home to some of the nation’s biggest and most successful black businesses continue to succeed despite the odds: Loop Capital, Ariel Investments, The Will Group, Bowa Construction, and Power and Sons amongst others. It is simply not enough. We have the talent and determination to dig deep, facing down the forces that have long sought to hold us back. Affirmative Action programs helped us overcome a few barriers to entry, but it has never been easy and that has never stopped us.

The BLC, for its part, sees these Supreme Court decisions as a call to action. Elections have consequences and we are seeing that more clearly than ever. It is imperative for us, as community leaders, to show up and speak up about issues that so critically impact us. Not only because it’s the right thing to do, it’s also good for every business and every corner of this city.

We will not be discouraged by efforts to drag us backward. We know that we have accomplished so much in the face of adversity and that while we may be slowed down, we cannot be stopped.

Charles Smith

Executive Committee Chairman
